As their thirtieth wedding anniversary approaches, a couple discusses the value of having a loving family and its impact on their current lives. Winifred?s father was a doctor who immigrated to America from Guyana during the 1930s and started his medical practice in Oakland during the war. One day a man walked in to his office to be seen. It turned out to be Phillip?s grandfather. "My grandfather sought out a physician? and [he] happened to be my wife?s father." The couple found each other through their families, married and witnessed the massive changes during the Civil Rights Movement and its effect upon Oakland?s Black community, particularly the middle class. Their love is a testament to positive effect and long-held traditions of the Black Family.
