About this author: Kamika Dunlap, is a metro reporter for the Oakland Tribune, covering East Oakland and urban affairs. Her career experience includes work as a reporter for The Arizona Republic and the San Jose Mercury News. The articles she has written mainly focus on community issues, education and social trends among young people. She currently is a fellow with the California Endowment Health Journalism program. A native of San Francisco, Dunlap earned her master'sdegree from UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. She also participated as one of four top young journalists from around the nation to participate in Knight Ridder's Minority Specialty Development Program, a one year internship that gives a minority journalist experience in specialty beat reporting. Other internship experience includes her work at The Albuquerque Journal, The New Jersey Star-Ledger and participation in an international reporting trip to South Africa.
