Images Speak Words - My Great Grandmother Robbie Gordon
by Saalih
June 2006

My great grandmother Robbie Gordon was born in Houston, Texas but as a child she lived in Oakland, California. She was born January 2, 1923. She was an only child when growing up. Most of her family was born in Houston. She came to live in the Bay Area because her parents moved here.

My grandmother says her favorite games growing up were jump rope, hide and seek and hopscotch. Her grandmother and mom were born in Boucher, Texas. She has never attended a family reunion but what makes her family so special is that they love each other.

Her favorite family photo was taken July 4, 1956. It has her mother, children and friends. The most talked about stories in her family are holiday meals. The one person that made a difference in her life is her grandmother Winnie Hunter. She taught her how to study her background and how to grow up. She didn't know what she wanted to be. Her favorite movies growing up were Shirley Temple and Tarzan. She also loved her childhood.

What I like about this photo is it's my great grandmother getting married.

She said: This is my wedding reception taken on July 8, 1995. It's me and my husband.
